For starters, every plan is hand drawn on graph paper. Each plan is an
ariel view, showing the area of the residence where the deck will be
built including any important doors or windows, the proposed deck size
and shape including floor direction, stairs and any optional accessories,
and any trees or other existing structures that may help show how the
deck relates to the property. The handrail and edges of most accessories
are shaded to give contrast to the rest of the drawing.
The squares created by the graph paper show the scale of the deck. Usually,
each square equals one square foot but for fairly large decks, each square
may equal two or more square feet. Whatever the scale, it is always noted
at the top of the plan for easy reference. We do the plans in this manner
as opposed to blueprints with dimension lines, as an architect would
draw, to keep the drawing uncluttered and easier for our customers to
understand.
Deck Plan For A Single Level Deck
This is a one level deck. Not much to it. Because it's hand drawn, we
usually only draw the entire floor in if it's absolutely necessary to
properly show step downs or transitions.
Deck Plan For A Multi-Level Deck
This plan has three levels on a lot that slopes left to right. You can also tell how high a deck is off the ground with a quick examination of our plans. One can assume that the left side of this main deck is either flush with the ground or about 7 inches off the ground (steps are an average of 7 inches each) since there is no handrail there. On the right you can count the steps and decide that this edge of the deck is approximately 4-1/2 feet high. The line at the top with arrows at each end signifies the exterior wall of the house.
It is very rare for a homeowner to see one of our custom plans and not understand it. They are familiar with their home and yard and they become familiar with our accessories through pictures or by seeing our work in person. After drawing a plan like this, the vision of the project becomes perfectly clear to each homeowner.
